There are many myths surrounding the art of singing. Many people believe that only "special" people can sing, that you have to be "born" with the ability or that it is "too late" for them to learn. However, almost all vocal coaches agree that anyone, yes anyone, can learn to sing!

Expensive lessons are not necessarily the best way to learn to sing. Not every singer who becomes famous took expensive singing lessons early on in their careers. Mimicry and self confidence can often help the most.

Don't be intimidated by what you see on pop culture television. Remember that shows such as American Idol are cleverly produced for shock value. Many of the terrible candidates you see trying out are the worst case examples of people who have no control of pitch or volume. They were selected purely for entertainment; most of them could learn to sing properly if they applied themselves and spent some time on vocal training exercises.

To dispel another singing myth, very few people are really "tone-deaf". It's a term often used to identify someone who sings badly off key, off pitch or with too much volume. The reality is less than 2% of the population is tone deaf. People who cannot sing on pitch simply need ear training. This can be done with the help of a qualified vocal coach or by investing in a good quality learn-to-sing program.

Anyone can learn to sing but not every voice is suited for all kinds of music. The human voice is an instrument, much like any other musical instrument and part of studying singing is learning about your unique instrument and what it is ideally suited for.

When you start your singing career you might not have any of your own songs. That's fine but remember,if you do not sing your own material, it is important to choose the right songs for your voice. If you have a gentle voice if would not be wise to sing the hugely powered vocals of a Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston song as you could end up damaging your voice!

Sing within your ability but be passionate about your work. The tone of your voice is much more important than the range. People will love or hate your voice based on its sound character, not how many notes you can hit. Never sacrifice tone for range (stay inside your range). There are instances of professional, commercially successful singers with only a single octave range (Billie Holiday and Johnny Mathis).

The only standard for what makes a professional or commercially-viable singer is the ability to sing in pitch and to be unique. Do not simply copy your favourite singer's voice. It takes a lot more than voice if you are interested in becoming a professional singer. You need to have a unique style about you and your voice is just one extension of that style.

Singing well is a skill, improved upon with proper breathing coordination. It is an extension of speech. To become a "good" singer you must be able to breathe properly, sing with power (resonance) and sing in pitch. To become a "great" singer you'll need to add dynamics and develop a style that's all your own.

Find the joy in singing. There's nothing like watching someone performing in their "element." If you love singing, then it'll show no matter how well you sing. Believe and trust in yourself and don't assume that you know it all. It takes time to develop your sound AND your voice. Sing proudly, no matter what your level of expertise or experience, and remember that learning to sing should be an enjoyable experience. Smile and have fun whenever you sing!

Yet another generation of music lovers has been introduced to an "oldie but goodie." Gatorade's newest sports drink, Tiger, named for golfing great Tiger Woods, is promoted via a "Moonshot" video which depicts the world's greatest golfer (in a space suit) lacing a drive off the surface of the moon to the tune of the late 60's classic (released in 1969) "Spirit In The Sky."

"Spirit In The Sky" is the song that puts folk-rocker Norman Greenbaum in the "one-hit-wonder" category of popular music (it peaked in March of 1970 at #3). It has endured despite Greenbaum's short and uneven career in record-making. (Greenbaum was known for unusual songs with odd titles such as "Canned Ham." But hey, this was THE 70s!)

Although "Spirit In The Sky" is not considered a gospel song in the traditional sense, clearly the subject is going to the great beyond...if you "have a friend in Jesus." A strikingly traditional religious sentiment for the period.

"Spirit In The Sky" was prominently featured in the 1995 Ron Howard directed blockbuster Apollo 13 starring Tom Hanks. It was also notably recorded by alt-country rockers The Kentucky Headhunters and, more recently, by British pop singer Gareth Gates.

In this article I will try to give a few examples of guitar tabs for beginners. Before I do that, just a quick run through of just what these are.

Music comes in two forms. Firstly written or sheet music. Secondly is tablature which is shortened to tabs. The notation is different but tablature is easier to use. When looking at a music sheet you will see six horizontal lines. They represent the guitar strings. Secondly you will see a series of 0, 1, 2 at various places on the lines. These numbers refer to finger placement and fret positions on the guitar stock. As the song progresses the places to put your fingers changes. I won't go into detail here at the moment. You will need to look elsewhere for learning how to actually play and read music.

So to a few of my favorites of mine.

The Star. yes that's right Twinkle, twinkle little star how I wonder what you are..

The first verse would look something like this below.

This would be represented like this on a musical tab.

Now you would think all musical songs would be written or tabulated in the same way. I am afraid this not the case.

The arts world loves to create. Take the simple tune of Happy Birthday for example. Easy enough you would think. So did I until I started looking around.

It would appear the tab for this is not as straight forward as I thought.

I found several different interpretations of this very basic tune. Even the way the score was shown was different in some cases. May be the atmosphere at the parties had something to do with it.

I am sorry to say it's not something you can pick up over night and play the next day with ease.
Reading, understanding and playing music needs to be learnt or taught to the person wishing to play.

Another part of learning to play is practice, practice and yet more practice. I supposes it like anything you want to do really well at.

Well I hope this little article shed a little light on the subject.

In the early and mid-90s, I did quite a bit of promotion work with local musicians. At that time, I was helping musicians who primarily played in coffeehouses get their first CDs played on college/public/community radio stations. We thought that with all the radio DJs out there in that market, we might find some who might be willing to listen to and take a chance on giving some unknown but talented person some airplay.

The scene has changed a lot since then. You now have the explosion of the Internet and streaming MP3 sites in which anyone can upload their music and be heard anywhere at any moment. Yet, some independent artists still do pursue radio airplay as part of their career strategy. In fact, I get unsolicited inquiries fairly often to this day. I thought I would take a look back and share some details on how some artists had some success...a few a bit beyond their expectations.

Most of the artists I assisted were folk/acoustic musicians. The first thing we did was try to identify stations that would be willing to hear them. Through the help of a folk dj e-mail list which posted digests of radio show playlists, we had an idea of what was being played and who was playing it. We then contacted the show hosts or music directors first by e-mail, providing a musical description of the artist and the CD (without flowery hyperbole about how fabulous the CD is), and asking if there would be interest in airplay. If they responded positively, we sent a CD and short bio. We did not just blindly send out CDs to an address just because it was on a list of folk radio stations. We wanted to be sure that money and time (both ours and the DJs) was being spent wisely by going to the people and places that would give the best possibilities for airplay.

After a few weeks, we would check posted airplay lists or send follow up e-mails to see if the CD was being played. On the average, about half of the stations we would send a CD to would report airplay. We had some heartening success stories. Some local artists were getting international interest as well as national airplay. A couple even got reviews in folk magazines such as Sing Out! or Dirty Linen. One musician's CD ended up on a radio station's top 40 year end "best of" list. I also offered additional help to a regional artist who already had a respectable following in her marketing efforts. Eventually we lost count of all the stations that played her CD and she ended up being signed to a folk label.

Lessons here: 1) Do your homework first--it's worth it. (Unfortunately, people who still send me unsolicited and inappropriate material haven't learned this one. ) 2) Never say never...unless you at least try, you just never know who might hear you, and where.

Learning how to tune a guitar by ear takes practice to perfect but once you have mastered this skill you'll be glad you did.

Guitar tuners are easier to use and a necessity when you are in loud environments where you cant hear very well such as bars. Tuning your guitar by ear will come in handy when you have a guitar but no electronic tuner around.

Besides, if you are playing songs around the campfire, your friends won't want to see you stop and pull out your guitar tuner every time it goes out of tune.

So this is how you can tune your guitar, in standard tuning, by ear!

It's good to practice trying to tune the A string without any tools to help you. But until you can identify exactly how it is supposed to sound, you can use an A 440 tuning fork.

1. Gently tap the side of the tuning fork on your knee and place the stem of the fork on your guitar. You should now hear the tuning forks "A" tone resonating through the body of your guitar.

2. Now pluck your A (5th) string. Does it sound like your tuning fork? If it does, then perfect, you are ready for the next string. If not, turn the tuning peg down if the note is sharp and up if the note is flat. Once this string sounds like the tone from the tuning fork, you are ready to tune your other strings to this "in tune" A (5th) string.

3. Your next step is to press your finger on the 5th fret on the low E (6th) string and pick it. Now pick the open A (5th) string and compare the two tones. If they sound the same, then your string is in tune. If not, turn the E string tuning peg down if the note is sharp or up if the note is flat.

4. Repeat the last step but this time placing your finger on the 5th fret on the A (5th) string and picking the open D (4th) string. Tune the D string up or down until the two strings sound the same.

5. Now lets repeat these steps on the 5th fret on the D (4th) string and pick the open G (3rd) string. Tune the G string up or down until these strings sound the same.

For the next step you will have to do something a little different.

6. Press your finger on the 4th fret on the G (3rd) string and not the 5th fret this time. Now pick the G (3rd) string and then pick the open B (2nd) string. Tune the B string until they sound the same.

7. Next you will put your finger on the 5th fret of the B (2nd) string and pick this string and the high E (1st) string. Tune the high E string up or down until they sound the same.

Well, there you go. Now you know how to tune a guitar by ear!

The First Step and Most Important Thing in Learning Guitar

Most of the guitar lovers playing guitar for few years but still unsatisfied with their progress. They feel like still stand at the starting point and can't enjoy their playing. This mainly caused by most of them don't build up a strong foundation at the begining. I found that some of the guitar learners even just playing guitar for one to two years but are more better than so many that playing for over five years. This is the foundation problems. Me myself was an example when I started playing guitar long time ago.

The secrets of learning guitar are mostly base on the foundation.To have a good foundation for future success,we need three important factors :-

1.Listening:

Ear training is a MUST basic training that every guitar learner should have. But most of them avoid this as quite a boring and time-consuming job. Without a good listening, we are unable to move to higher level.
To overcome this problems, I suggest that guitar learners may choose one of the well known Ear Training software on internet. I found that there are few really good software that will improve your listening step by step and really FUN. You feel like playing game when you learn.

2.Daily practice: (Both fingers and ears)

Daily practice is another important thing we should do.(Ex.fingers exercises, practice for the basic scales)
I suggest that beginners practice PENTATONIC SCALES at the starting point because this scales are the most simple scales that only have 5 tones. Try to practice 20 to 30 minutes daily. Remember that even just 20 minutes of RELAX and CONCERNTRATION DAILY practice is more effective than few hours of unconstant practice.

3.Look for a teacher:

You may find either private guitar teacher or guitar lessons on internet. For my opinions,learn guitar from internet maybe better because of the convinience of time and cheaper. There is just one question of learning from internet that what lessons to choose, what lessons are really work.
Myself as a guitar lover have been playing guitar for 15 years.

Singers - Maintaining Your Health

Brace yourselves my fellow professional singers! We are in cold and flu season!

Whether you are a classical/opera singer like me, or into other forms of music, a singer has to be healthy first and foremost. We must develop and maintain good vocal health, using proper techniques and avoiding smoking, and excessive alcohol. We cannot be too careful when we make a living that depends on two little membrane folds (we call vocal chords) inside our throats.

It is ironic that many of us tend to have sinus or allergy problems that attack our livelihood. The symptoms always seem to flare up just when we have Midnight Mass and holiday concerts. So we have to be careful not to hurt our voices. But what do you do?

21st Birthday Ideas

As the theme queen, all my friends who are turning 21 this year wanted me to give them a few ideas to make their birthday party stand out from everyone else's. They wanted something unique, fun and memorable so here are a couple of ideas that I came up with.

THE BASICS

* Where

21st Birthday parties can be pretty cheap especially if you host it home in your back garden. If you do hire a hall or a club room, you must make sure there are toilets. If you do have it at home, include a big projector screening the last 21 years of your life in a mixture of movies and photos that will run continuously through the night and remove anything you don't wish to be damaged and lock doors that should be kept shut.

* Alcohol

It's up to you whether you provide alcohol or it's a BYO affair. If you have a bar at a club, make sure you have a tab limit which stops when you rich it or else you'll be left with a nasty surprise the next day. If you're in your backyard, fill big tubs or coolers with ice to allow the alcohol to be kept cold.

* Non-alcoholic

For those not drinking alcohol, for people under aged or for people looking for something to mix with their alcohol, juices and soft drink are great and a fantastic alternative for when the tab runs dry. Buy cans of drink in bulk to avoid having lots of plastic cups everywhere and fruit juices are pretty cheap too.

* Food

If at home, have a BBQ with bread rolls and salads and plenty of finger foods. Chips, pretzels and nuts are always a winner and try and avoid foods that require cutlery. If catering, finger foods that do the rounds are great and also means less clean up with no cutlery and paper plates.

THEMES

The Rubik's Cube Party.

A Rubik's Cube Party is a party where you have to dress up in different colours of the Rubik's cube (red, white, yellow, green, blue, orange) and by midnight you have to have swapped with other people until you're dressed all in one colour. It's quite amusing seeing guys squeezing into girls' shirts/skirts and everyone swapping shoes to get the right colour resulting in a lot of confusion. It sorta goes without saying that you don't wear your favourite shirt unless you don't mind loosing it. Award prizes at midnight for the best dressed/sexiest dressed/worst dressed etc and make sure you take plenty of pictures!

The Masquerade Ball

Want to really dress up? Then a Masquerade Ball is perfect where everyone must wear evening attire (suits for the guys and dresses for the girls) with colourful masks. Hire a hall and decorate in one or two colours with plenty of balloons and streamers and hire a DJ that will not only play the latest stuff but also something to waltz too. Give out prizes for not only the best mask but also the best dancer, best couple, worst dressed etc.

Alice in Wonderland

Take a trip back to your childhood and into the past with all your guests dressed up as Alice in Wonderland characters. Dress up as the Mad Hatter or the Cheshire Cat and hold the party in a room decorated as a Victorian Gin room with black and white photographs and "servants" that will serve drinks and finger foods.

Pirates vs Ninjas

Either dress as a pirate or a ninja and have a face off with water balloons (best done outside) and drink "ale" "grog" and "sake." Decorate the room with seafaring objects like pirate hats, flags and boats. For food cut up sandwiches to look like throwing stars and have a roast pig (or other joint of meat unless you're vegetarian) rotating over a fire. Have a treasure hunt with a pot of chocolate gold to be found! YUM!

These are just 4 ideas that will hopefully help you out when planning your big day. Be creative and add your own individual spin and ENJOY YOURSELF!
